Early Life
James Madison was born on March 16, 1751 in Port Conway, Virginia. He was never a very outgoing person, really. This was because when he was not suffering from some sort of illness, he was busy being an intelligent introvert. He had 11 siblings, but four of them died before adulthood. James Madison's dad owned over 3,000 acres of land and kept lots of slaves. Strangely, Madison was opposed to slavery while at the same time owned slaves of his own for most of his life. He also wanted all freed slaves to go back to Africa and in 1816 co-founded "The American Colonization Society" which supported the idea. James Madison graduated from Princeton University. He was about 5' 6" tall and almost always weighed under 100 pounds (James Madison is the smallest president ever)! Dolley Madison met James Madison in Philadelphia in the year 1794. They ended up getting married that same year! James Madison did not have any children, but Dolley Madison already had a child named John Payne Todd. Todd did not like his step-father and avoided having to spend any time or have anything to do with him. John Todd never really amounted to much of anything - he pretty much just drank alcohol, associated himself with "low-class" women, and was not frugal with money. James Madison did not spend too much alone time with either family member. He enjoyed playing chess, reading in Greek or Latin, going on horseback rides, and walking through forests. Despite being an introvert, James Madison also enjoyed socializing with friends and even did some partying once in a while.
